Mary Parker Follett (3 september 1868 – 18 december 1933) was een Amerikaanse sociologe, bedrijfsconsultant, en auteur met boeken over democratie, leiderschap, relaties en management. Ze wordt beschouwd als een grondlegger van het moderne management, wordt passend de moeder van het moderne management genoemd.

Mary Parker Follett werd geboren op 3 september 1968 in Quincy, Verenigde Staten. Haar vader was Charles Allen Follett, een machinist werkzaam bij een plaatselijke schoenenfabriek. Haar moeder heette Elizabeth Curtis Follett en was van Engels-Schotse en Welshe afkomst.

Het grootste gedeelte van haar jeugd bracht ze door door bij de welvarende Quaker-familie in Quincy. Daar volgde zij een opleiding aan de Thayer Academy, en verzorgde ze haar familie en gehandicapte moeder.

In 1888 begon Follett aan het Collegiate Instruction of Woman aan Harvard. Later heeft deze instelling de naam Radcliffe College gekregen. In 1890 voltooide ze, voor haar afstuderen, een jaar studie aan het Newnham College, aan de Universiteit van Cambridge. De studente studeerde in 1898 summa cum laude af aan het Collegiate Instruction of Woman, en in 1896 publiceerde ze haar eerste werk.

De jaren 1900 tot 1908 wijdde de sociologe volledig toe aan maatschappelijk werk in Roxbury, een wijk in Boston. In 1908 werd ze gekozen als voorzitter van de commissie voor schoolgebouwen. In 1911 opende haar commissie de East Boston High School Social Centre. Dat begon aanvankelijk als een experiment, maar bleek zeer succesvol en leidde tot de komst van talrijke andere sociale centra in de wijk Boston.

Vanaf 1908 tot 1920 leidde Follett enkele andere commissies gewijd aan de ontwikkeling van sociale centra in Boston. Ook was ze actief voor het afdwingen van minimumloonwetgeving. Ondertussen nam ze in 1917 het vicepresidentschap over van de National Community Center Association. Een jaar later in 1918 publiceerde ze haar boek over gemeenschappen, democratie en regering: ‘De Nieuwe Staat’. Hierin beschreef ze een organische vorm van democratie die gebaseerd was op natuurlijk buurlijnen.

In haar volgende boek focuste ze zich meer op de sociale en psychologische gevolgen van haar eerdere werk. Dat boek was ‘Creative Experience’, gepubliceerd in 1924. Haar ideeën werden specifiek toegepast in het industriële management, en dat leidde haar naar een carrière als docent.

Het laatste gedeelte van haar carrière besteedde ze aan het schrijven over management. Ze publiceerde veel werken, en was een van de eerste vrouwen ooit die mocht spreken aan de London School of Economics. Daar sprak ze over complexe managementkwesties. Ze onderscheidde zichzelf ook op het gebied van management door verschillende non-profitorganisaties te beheren voor de Amerikaanse ex-president Theodore Roosevelt.

Mary Parker stierf op 18 december 1933 in Boston, Massachusetts.
