Kurt Lewin - Toolshero

Kurt Lewin (1890 – 1947) was een Duits-Amerikaanse psycholoog, die vooral bekend is geworden als één van de moderne pioniers op het gebied van sociale, organisatie en toegepaste psychologie. Kurt Lewin wordt gezien als grondlegger van de eerste groepsdynamica studies en organisatie ontwikkeling.

Kurt Lewin biografie

In 1909 begon Kurt Lewin aan een studie medicijnen aan de Universiteit van Freiberg. Deze studie zette hij later om in een studie biologie aan de Universiteit van München.

In die tijd raakte hij betrokken bij een socialistische beweging. Deze beweging hield zich bezig met het bestrijden van antisemitisme, democratisering en het verbeteren van de rechten voor vrouwen.

Ook hij diende als soldaat voor het Duitse leger tijdens de Eerste Wereldoorlog. In een periode van vier jaar raakte hij tijdens de oorlog gewond en keerde terug naar Duitsland. Uiteindelijk promoveerde (Ph.D.) Kurt Lewin in 1916 aan de Universiteit van Berlin. Tijdens zijn promotieonderzoek ontwikkelde hij zijn interesse in filosofie wetenschappen en Gestalt psychologie.

Kurt Lewin ging in 1921 aan de slag bij de Universiteit van Berlin, faculteit psychologie als docent. Daar doceerde hij op de vakgebieden filosofie en psychologie en verzorgde seminars. Door zijn interesse en gedrevenheid begon hij te onderzoeken en te publiceren waardoor zijn werk ook internationaal bekend werd.

Door zijn bekendheid in de Verenigde Staten werd Lewin in 1930 uitgenodigd door de Universiteit van Stanford. Voor een periode van zes maanden was hij daar bezoekend professor. Deze ervaring zorgde ervoor dat hij emigreerde naar de Verenigde Staten, samen met zijn vrouw en dochter.

Theorie over groepsdynamica en verandermanagement

Tot 1944 doceerde Kurt Lewin aan de Universiteit van Iowa (Verenigde Staten). In die tijd is hij vooral bekend geworden met zijn onderzoek en theorieën over groepsdynamica, actieonderzoek, de Krachtveldenanalyse, en het bekende verandermodel Kurt Lewin Change model en leiderschapsklimaten.

Deze verandermanagement theorieën werden praktisch toegepast en getoetst tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog, bijvoorbeeld het moraal van de gevechtstroepen, psychologische oorlogsvoering en de heroriëntatie van korte termijn voedselvoorziening.

In 1944 zette Kurt Lewin samen met collega’s het Onderzoekscentrum voor Groepsdynamica aan het Instituut voor Technologie in Massachusetts (MIT, Verenigde Staten) op.
